For Sceptics of Lucid Dreaming

Are you a lucid dream sceptic? Some people are. They usually fall into one of two categories:

Some sceptics simply don't accept that lucid dreams exist. They point to what they see as logical fallacies in the whole idea of lucid dreaming, or they point to biological studies that "prove" lucid dreams aren't "real".

It's difficult to argue with people who are sceptical of lucid dreams as a concept. Lucid dreaming is personal and experiential. All I can say is that I know lucid dreams are real because I've had them. I'm not wet-behind-the-ears and easily influenced (take a look at my main blog for evidence of that!). I know what meditation and daydreaming feels like, I know about hypnopompic and hypnagogic states. So when I say I've experienced something different, don't tell me I'm wrong. Whatever the biological mechanism, whatever the technical definition of the state, lucid dreaming is real. You can disagree with the interpretation, not the experience.

Which brings me to the second type of lucid dream sceptic. These people accept that lucid dreaming is real, they just take issue with many of the claims made for it.

To these people I say: I agree!

Just for the record, let me say what in my opinion - and it is just my opinion - lucid dreams are not.

Lucid dreams...

  • ARE NOT higher states of consciousness. Different, perhaps.
  • ARE NOT mystical or religious experiences
  • ARE NOT symptoms of any psychic power; not that I discount such things in principle
  • ARE NOT any form of merging with the universe
  • ARE NOT evidence of my divinity (shame...)
Lucid dreams for me are simply an interesting, useful and above all fun experience. An experience that happens occasionally by accident of brain and body function and which over time most people can learn to reproduce.

If you're still a lucid dream sceptic, fair enough. For your own sake, don't let that scepticism hold you back from a wonderful experience.
